Coa's Owner Expansion Efforts Thwarted by Racist Mayor

Since opening earlier this year in Maple Leaf, Mexican restaurant and tequileria Coa has been warmly welcomed by the neighborhood. Coa's owner Edgar Carreon and his brother Carlos planned to open Calle Tacos and Tequila, a similar tacos and tequila business in Downtown Mount Vernon. However, Mount Vernon Mayor Bud Norris has opposed granting Calle a liquor license.

Mount Vernon residents allege that Mayor Norris discriminates against liquor applications from Latinos. They cite Mayor Norris's proposal to establish English as the official language of Mount Vernon. Mayor Norris denies any racism charges, arguing, "I have many Mexican friends."
