In an email newsletter, owner and chef Seth Caswell announced that Emmer & Rye will close on October 28, after dinner service. Caswell cited costs as the primary reason:
With restaurants operating on such tight profit margins, it is very difficult to deal with the increasing cost of goods and services today. My bills are 150% higher than they were when emmer&rye opened, but the check averages are the same.Emmer & Rye opened nearly three years ago, occupying a craftsman home that served as a Julia's outpost. Caswell hints at a Emmer & Rye 2.0 in his farewell letter and tells Seattle Times' Rebekah Denn that a future venue will probably be smaller and in a different neighborhood. An evangelist for sustainable, farm-fresh food, Caswell looks forward to future projects involving these interests.
