It's almost time to hit up the new B&O Espresso in Ballard. Opening is slated for first week of February as owners Majed and Jane Lukatah are now going through the final permitting steps. The new place is in the Canal Station building and replaces the shuttered Monette's Deli.
The original B&O at 204 Belmont Ave E. on Capitol Hill closed December 9, 2012 to
make way for new development. The coffee/dessert spot had been open for 37 years.
The new B&O will have the same bakers and the Ballard menu will have the full roster of cakes and pies plus morning pastries, espresso and tea. New on the everyday menu—sweet and savory crepes to sate the ravenous locals.
While searching all over Capitol Hill for a new location, Jane Lukatah said that the Ballard location popped up and they grabbed it because, along with Cap Hill, "We like Ballard!"
Following them to the new location: Toulouse-Lautrec and Napoleon (the art prints not the dead Frenchmen), and the antique furniture from the old place. And don't forget to look for the secret napkin drawer, where for years people have been leaving notes about their hopes and dreams, and sometimes their shortcomings.
After construction completes at the Capitol Hill site, the Lukatahs hope to reopen there, possibly in 2014.
