The staff at Altstadt, the long-awaited German beer hall from Hitchcock's Brendan McGill, are scurrying to get the new Pioneer Square space ready for its close-up. It opens to the public at 6 pm tonight.
The full menu will be available, including several types of wurst (the bockwurst, made with turkey and duck fat white sausage looks particularly intriguing), and beilagen (sides), including a soft pretzel ($5), frites ($5), and stewed organic kale with buckwheat groats ($6). There's also daily specials and dessert (strudel, of course, along with a vanilla rice pudding with almond brittle).
There are 12 taps, mostly all German, with the exception of a local cider (Anthem) and a Chuckanut Belgium-style beer.
Altstadt will be open for dinner tomorrow and will begin its 11 am to 11 pm schedule on Wednesday. Expect an official grand opening in about a week or so.
