This Is a Photo of Whale Wins Projection Art

Renee Erickson posted this photo on Facebook last night, as artist Kyler Martz was busy sprucing up her restaurant, The Whale Wins, in time for Spring. Here, Martz is drawing on the big brick wall between Whale and Evo, facing 35th in Fremont. Since the wall is so dark, he can only work at night when the projection is visible.

According to Martz, who specializes in this kind of drawing (although this is his first large mural), the image is based on a screen print he did a while ago.

The owners saw it and thought it would fit well on the wall, and I was excited at the chance to work at a large scale. I've been drawing these boats for a while, and I don't know if there is much more to them other than I love seeing all the boats around Seattle, and it's fun to imagine them as something living and breathing.

Martz says he has one more night of painting, then hopefully just some minor touchups in the morning. By the time he's done, he figures he will have logged 20-25 hours on The Whale Wins project.
