Local startup competition The Lion's Den (co-founded by Tom Douglas) is collecting final submissions for its January 15 showdown at the Palace Ballroom. The deadline for entering is December 15.

The competition has been described as "Shark Tank with a Soul," and it's not just for food-related startups. Details from a recent press release:

The Lions, a mix of investors, mentors and judges comprise a star-studded Seattle proud cast. Sujal Patel, Isilon co-founder and Craig Schafer, owner of Hotel Andra are looking to fund the next great startup. Julie Sandler, Principal at Madrona Venture Group is looking for best pitch, to be awarded with an exclusive behind the scenes tour at Tom Douglas Restaurants. John Cook, co-founder of GeekWire, and the longest serving journalist on the startup tech beat in Seattle will, no doubt, be asking the toughest questions of the presenting entrepreneurs.

Ticket holders to the January 15 event will also pitch in to help the startups, too, though the seats sold out in a matter of days. The event will take place twice annually, with the next opportunity coming in September 2015.
