After 40 years at their Market Street location, the Ballard Azteca will shutter this Friday, February 28. While the Mexican restaurant began franchising years ago, the original Ballard store has been serving the neighborhood the longest of them all. Owners the Ramos family posted the news in their window a few days ago, thanking customers for support and encouraging them to go to the Northgate Mall location.
Eater caught up with longtime server Chris Rayon who gave the inside scoop on the move. Though there are a few reasons for the restaurant closing, the main one is that their lease was not renewed with the landlords once it runs out this month.
Friday will be the last day for Azteca in its current incarnation, and they'll be going out big with a DJ until 2 a.m. and a dance party in the main room of the restaurant for anyone who wants to come. After the last day, most of the cooks will head down to work at the Burien location, while some of the front of the house staff will move up to the Mukilteo Azteca.
