Fat's Wings & Waffles is about to open in Rainier Beach. The new brick-and-mortar from Darren McGill (Happy Grillmore food truck) and Marcus Lalario (Li'l Woody's) fills a niche in a part of town that could use a little more fried bird. "There isn't a chicken and waffles place anywhere in the south end," McGill tells Eater. McGill and Lalario are working to keep prices down while offering organic produce and local ingredients.
In addition to fried chicken and homemade waffles, Fat's will serve five different wing flavors, including a General Tso's "Asian-style" and coconut lime jalapeño. A classic kids menu with corn dogs and house-made mac and cheese is also in the works.
McGill launched the first Happy Grillmore truck in Portland before selling it a couple of years back. He's since started up a Happy Grillmore in Seattle and moved into a permanent address in Rainier Beach. He found Fat's location on a whim.
The space near 57th and Rainier Ave. housed Lake Route Cafe for decades. "I was just driving around and saw that it came up for lease," McGill says. "People around the hood said it used to be a popular spot." The totally revamped interior will fit around 30, with additional outdoor seating planned for the summer.
McGill says the buildout it "95 percent done" and plans to officially open at the end of April or beginning of May.
