Like opening two new projects in the upcoming Chophouse Row this fall isn't enough, Volunteer Park Cafe chef/owner Ericka Burke is also hard at work on her new neighborhood grocery, Canal Market. The Portage Bay space includes a deli island serving made-to-order salads and sandwiches (Burke was inspired by the excellent Oakville Grocery in Yountville, CA,) and a breakfast buffet with a rotating list of homemade toppings for toast and granola. Coffee comes from Slate, plus fresh-pressed juice.
Seating will run alongside the front windows and at a communal table. Canal Market will also sell household essentials, gifts, wine and beer, and produce. And there will be a cooler with artisan ice cream and candy sold by the pound. If the schedule keeps, Canal Market will open by the end of November.
