It's been a whirlwind two months for the U District's Pizza Pi. On August 15, the 13-year-old vegan pizza shop at 5500 University Way NE posted on Facebook, "With much regret, Pizza Pi Vegan Pizzerias' last foreseeable day of business will be September 15th."

But fear not, vegans, for on September 10, the owners reported: "WE HAVE AMAZING NEWS!!! To our loyal Pizza Pi family and friends, we are so excited to let you know that two awesome vegans have come forward to save Pizza Pi from an untimely closure. We will remain open and will be transitioning to new ownership soon. We are all so excited for them to carry the torch!"

The ownership officially transferred the weekend of September 19 to 20, and the new owners Rex Ray and Meredith Monroe introduced themselves on Facebook last Thursday as follows:

My name is Rex Ray and I co-own Pizza Pi with Meredith. I've been vegan and a customer of Pizza Pi for over a decade! I have years of experience working at corporate and independent pizza restaurants and am excited to bring my skills to Pi. In my personal life, I'm a vocal advocate for the rights of animals and an active volunteer with Sea Shepherd. I think the best way to transition more folks to veganism is with delicious food!

Meredith Monroe is the other half of Pizza Pi. She has spent her entire adult career as a licensed veterinary technician, helping to nurse and heal sick and injured animals. She has also been vegan for over a decade and has worked with Pasado's Safe Haven to help end the cruelty and neglect of farmed and companion animals. She's a self-proclaimed vegan pizza addict!

Together, we have the ethics, passion for animals, and love for pizza to ensure that Pizza Pi thrives and grows for years to come. We will we be training closely with Kenneth and Cassi over the next month to ensure your orders are made to perfection. Please stop by, say hello, and let us know if there is anything we can do to make your experiences more enjoyable. YAY, Pi!!!

Pizza Pi is open Tuesday through Friday from 4 to 10 p.m., Saturday from noon to 10 p.m., and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. No word yet if there are any changes to the menu.
