Washington's first cooperative brewery and tasting room, Flying Bike, is set to open August 15 at 8570 Greenwood Ave N. The brewery was built and will be run by its member-volunteers, which currently number more than 1,500.

Flying Bike has been brewing beer by committee since 2011; member-owners submit and vote for the beers brewed, a process that will continue once the tasting room is open.

In May, the brewery brought on Kevin Forhan as Head Brewer. Most recently, he brewed at the RAM Restaurant and Brewery chain and before that at Pike Brewing Company and Elysian Brewing Company.

"Flying Bike Cooperative Brewery is clearly something special. Many people have worked long and hard, essentially as volunteers, to make it happen," says Forhan. "I’m honored, excited, a little nervous, and very hopeful that Flying Bike has a future as unique and promising as its beginnings."
