It's almost time, Central District. While Terrell Jackson has been busy relaunching Catfish Corner in Rainier Beach, Marcus Lalario (L'il Woody's) has been preparing new Fat's Chicken and Waffles to move into the original Catfish space at 2726 E Cherry for nearly five months now. (And, completing the circle, Jackson's Catfish Corner has also signed a lease to open a second location back in the CD at 23rd and Jackson, hopefully by February.)
Lalario says the 900-square-foot, 35-seat Fat's will officially open next week—likely Wednesday—but passersby may be lucky enough to catch the team in the space before then during soft opening (from around 4 to 5 p.m. most days until about 9 or 10 p.m., or until they run out of food). Along with the restaurant's advertised chicken and waffles, Fat's southern New Orleans-style menu will feature chicken, shrimp, fried oysters, and catfish as either sandwiches or plates (ranging from about $8 to $14), as well as fried okra, fried green tomatoes, mac 'n cheese, and more as sides.
On the drinks front, there will be a small service bar with beer, wine, and cocktails. Erica White (Purple, Barrio) will be the general manager.
Firm hours are still being nailed down, but Fat's will be open for dinner to start (from around 4 to 10 p.m., 5 to 6 days a week), with plans to add breakfast, lunch, and weekend brunch eventually. Check out the Fat's Facebook page, as well as back here, for updates.
