West Seattle's restaurant hot streak continues today with the 4 p.m. opening of New Luck Toy at 5905 California Ave SW.
The business is a collaboration between Ma'ono Fried Chicken and Whiskey chef and owner Mark Fuller and Rhino Room partner Patric Gabre-Kidan. The kitchen concept is a sort of updated take on vintage Americanized Chinese food, with dishes like General Tso's chicken bathed in a house-made sauce, and Sichuan cumin lamb.
The slushy machines churning Singapore slings and pina coladas might have been a better fit for the restaurant's original June opening date, but hey, summer will be back eventually. There's also dive bar elements like Skee-Ball, pinball, and karaoke, indicating that this is a place to linger.
New Luck Toy takes its name from a 60-year-old neighborhood fixture that once existed on the same street. Fuller and company have seemingly attempted to get ahead of any cultural-appropriation backlash with a statement on the restaurant's Facebook page, noting that their establishment "is intended to show gratitude, respect, and admiration to the original":
