The small wholesale and pop-up bakery Hood Famous Bakeshop is putting down roots in Ballard with a to-go shop opening October 8.
The bakery has been holding soft openings in the new space since September 15, selling limited quantities of the purple-hued ube cheesecake — flavored and colored with ube, a type of purple yam — upon which the company has built its reputation. The store has been gradually ramping up its menu leading to a grand opening on Saturday.
Hood Famous Bakeshop was founded in 2014 by Chera Amlag, who specializes in Filipino, Hawaiian, and Asian desserts, with the creamy ube cheesecake at the heart of the business. Amlag has built a fan base through pop-up bake sales and by selling through several retailers, food delivery services, and restaurants in the area. She also co-founded the Filipino-inflected Food & Sh*t pop-up, for which she provided the rotating dessert courses.
When the permanent production location opens in Ballard, it will be provide for wholesale, catering, and take-away business only, with no seating available.
