Kryse Martin-McGill and Darren McGill (Nate’s Wings and Waffles, Central District Ice Cream Company) have finally opened Happy Grillmore at the corner of E. Jefferson and 13th Ave. in the Central District. The space has been built out since summer, but permitting for the hood exhaust system pushed back the opening until now. The restaurant replaces the couple’s award-winning, Portland-born burger truck of the same name.
Happy Grillmore, which sits next to Nate’s Wings and Waffles, will serve the signature burgers that have won various reader’s choice awards in Portland and Seattle over the years. The menu has some movie-themed picks like Chubs and You Can Do It; they’re joined by over-the-top options like the kalua pork hamburger, a take on a Hawaiian dish the McGills used to serve at their original cart in Portland.
The McGills are also serving chocolate, vanilla, and strawberry milkshakes with ice cream from Central District Ice Cream Company and deep-fried handpies filled with flavors like mixed berry, and dark chocolate smoked sea salt. On the booze front, there are a handful of beer options: Rainier, Hi-Life, Corona, Heineken, and Dead Guy Ale and 6 Hop IPA from Rogue Ales.
Happy Grillmore will be open this week from Tuesday through Friday, 4 to 9 p.m. Once the restaurant is fully staffed, it will adopt the same hours as Nate’s: Sunday through Thursday, 11 a.m. to 10 p.m., and Friday and Saturday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m.
