That didn’t take long: After just a month of remodeling, Brian Clevenger’s revamp of shuttered Ernest Loves Agnes is complete, and his two new restaurants are ready. Contadino and Pizzeria Contadino will open today at 5 p.m.
Clevenger (chef/owner of Vendemmia and Raccolto) announced his new projects, undertaken with partners Kayley Turkheimer and Jason LaJeunesse (a partner in the Ernest Loves Agnes chapter), earlier this month. Clevenger has brought on Nelson Whitmore, formerly of renowned Pizzeria Delfina in San Francisco, to oversee both spaces.
The space at 602 19th Avenue East will house Contadino, which will serve handmade pastas, vegetables, and seafood dishes — reminiscent of Clevenger’s specialties at his other restaurants. There will also be a chef’s counter where diners can partake in a $70-per-person tasting menu.
Sample menu items include lamb carpaccio with crème fraîche, arugula, and Parmesan; octopus with white beans, turnips, and herb salad; housemade pastas like cavatelli with bolognese, mint, and pecorino; and protein options like braised lamb shank with barley and chard and black cod with mushrooms, cream, and lemon zest.
Drinks will include “approachable” Italian and Northwest wines, cocktails, and bottled beers.
Next door, Pizzeria Contadino will serve starters, six set pizzas, and a daily rotating special pie. The menu include bites like bitter greens with lemon and Parmesan; house-stretched mozzarella with pesto and arugula; meatballs with tomato and chili flakes; and seared albacore tuna with white beans, currants, and celery. Pizza options include Calabrian sausage with escarole and mozzarella, wild mushrooms with Talleggio and thyme, and mozzarella with tomato and basil.
Expect eight beers and ciders on tap, plus a few bottles and cans. There are also Italian and Northwest wines and a full bar.
