Thanks to ardent fans and $37,519 in Kickstarter funds, artistic Georgetown bakery Deep Sea Sugar and Salt is bringing its resplendent cakes from a cute but cramped vintage Airstream trailer to a larger home in the historic Carleton Avenue Grocery this week. In the new space, Charlie Dunmire plans to sell her cakes — like the elegant London Fog, an Earl Grey-infused beauty with bergamot mascarpone cream and cream cheese frosting — alongside grocery essentials, Sweet Lo’s ice cream, fresh flowers, and drip coffee.

Though she hasn’t announced an exact opening date yet, Dunmire promises via social media that she’s unlocking the grocery’s doors sometime in the next few days. Meanwhile, she’ll keep her Airstream in the Georgetown Trailer Park Mall and use it to showcase more experimental and seasonal concoctions.

Dunmire has been in the Georgetown Trailer Park Mall since 2016; prior to that, she baked where she could find the space and did special orders only. She took over the Carleton Avenue Grocery in November, launching a Kickstarter campaign to help her outfit the new venue. Enthusiastic backers helped her exceed her $35,000 goal, based on the allure of desserts like the 9lb Porter cake, made with Georgetown Brewing beer, and Pistachio Lemon, a pistachio cake with salt syrup, lemon curd, and lemon cream cheese frosting.
