The Weimann Maclise restaurant group is shifting gears on its spacious Beer Star beer hall in White Center with a new project: Southside Pizza, a short-order Italian-American family eatery largely dedicated to pies served by the slice or whole. The classic combination of beer and pizza is slated to officially appear on June 26, though test runs are being performed throughout this weekend.
The menu comes from chef Manny Arce, who developed his affinity for cooking and earned some of his first kitchen stripes by working in a pizza restaurant. While pizza with a Jersey-sourdough hybrid crust is the main focus of Southside — with a selection that runs from straight cheese and pepperoni to more ornate specialties, plus a build-your-own option — there are complementary offerings of finger foods, salads, pasta, and cookies for dessert. Whatever a patron selects, they’re welcome to bring it over to Beer Star and couple it with a cold one.

Southside will be equipped with its own service window while sharing a seating space with the fourth chainlet location of burger slinger L’il Woody’s. Fans of the taphouse will recognize the location as the site of the quick-service spot Chinese Takeout, known for its tweaked versions of Chinese-American cuisine. This isn’t the end game for that project, however. As chef Manny Arce explains to Eater, “our hope is it will find a home elsewhere in the future.”
