Top Pot cofounder Michael Klebeck has opened a new fried dough enterprise called Half and Half Doughnut Co. in the former Sun Liquor Distillery space on Capitol Hill. The new doughnut shop, which opened last week, bakes its treats on site, using organic Northwest ingredients as much as possible. The menu includes such delicacies as pineapple fritters, Mexican chocolate old fashioned doughnuts, and cinnamon twists. Flavors are expected to change a bit with the seasons.
Klebeck, who started Top Pot with his brother, Mark, hired baker Alex Schwartzstein to oversee the menu. Schwartzstein’s other creations, apart from the doughnuts, include lemon blueberry and orange gingerbread scones, biscuits served with jam, and a few cookie options — including a gluten-free pine nut shortbread cookie.
The menu at Half and Half (516 E. Pike St.) skews savory, too, with breakfast sandwiches (including one with sun-dried tomato pesto, aioli, egg, white cheddar and a bacon add-on option) and sous vide eggs with various toppings, like bacon and cheese. There’s also a full coffee menu of espresso drinks, chai, and hot chocolate.
