Time to say goodbye to one well-regarded poultry purveyor. Big Chickie — a fast-casual Peruvian chicken spot in Hillman City that was a local favorite — will close permanently after service this Friday, the co-owners announced on Facebook. The restaurant had a five-year run on Rainier Ave S, serving up succulent portions of pollo a la brasa, along with cheesy empanadas and slow-cooked roast pork.

Big Chickie had been praised in the past for its “succulent” dark meat chicken options, variety of dipping sauces, and enticing sides such as rich potato gratin and yucca fries. It was mainly known as a good family-friendly takeout option in a neighborhood that’s broadening its dining scene, whether it’s the high-end Filipino tasting menu of Archipelago or the smoked meats at Emma BBQ down the road.

No word yet on what will take over the space. The co-owners would only reveal that it will be a “small business” that has a strong following. “We are deeply grateful to have had the opportunity to serve you and be part of the amazing Hillman City community for these past 5-plus years,” wrote husband and wife co-owners, Matt and Sara Stubbs. “We are proud of all that our team has accomplished in this time, and cherish the countless friends that we have made.”
