Pike Place Market has a new sweets purveyor in The Barque Brontes Bakery Cafe, which makes desserts like pastries and cakes, and serves espresso from local microroasters. To celebrate its opening, the bakery will give away samples of coffee and macarons from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on August 24.
The cafe (1426 Western Ave) has an under-counter espresso machine, intended to eliminate the physical barrier between the customers and the barista to allow for more interaction. Along those lines, the cafe also features large windows into the pastry production area, with bar stools nearby for watching the bakers at work. Desserts like croissants, pain au chocolat, twice-baked pastries, scones, macarons, cookies, cheesecake, and mini cakes make up the menu.

The bakery’s somewhat unwieldy name is borrowed from a ship that carried lumber from Seattle to San Francisco in the years after the cities were founded.
