Unassuming Ballard watering hole 418 Public House announced on Facebook that it will close after service on Saturday, October 19. The pub has become a neighborhood staple in its eight years in business, and it’s earned a reputation for reliable Mexican food — including deeply flavorful soups like caldo de birria and pozole, which helped the restaurant earn a spot on Eater Seattle’s list of the city’s best Mexican restaurants.

418 Public House told Eater that the restaurant is closing becuase the building it sits in will be torn down. A developer bought the property and is planning a three-story apartment building on the parcel, according to My Ballard.

When that sale was originally announced back in 2016, 418 Public House told Eater it had several years left on its lease with no plans to close. It seems now the vision for the plot has changed.
