Hollywood Tavern Chef Angie Roberts Picks Her 7 Favorite Taverns (Dive Bars)

View as Map

Chef Angie Roberts is busy busting out recipes for her new job as executive chef of Hollywood Tavern, currently on the calendar as opening this October in Woodinville. The new space will be an overhaul of the original tavern (formerly Mabel's), which dates back to the 1930s. In addition, Woodinville Whiskey is opening up an adjoining distillery (and it's coming along quite quickly). Nailing down a menu is great and all, but Angie also loves to do some dive bar recon once in awhile to, er, familiarize herself with tavern culture. As she says, "I love dive bars. I'm from Idaho so when I go to one it's like, 'I'm home!'"

Here now is a map of her 7 favorite dive bars in Seattle and why she loves them.

"Loretta's burgers are legit. So good. I love the airstream in the back and all the old Olympia beer signs hanging behind the bar."

"It's in my neighborhood so I can ride my bike there. They have shuffleboard, Centipede, Ms. Pac-Man and PBR Tall Boys. And you can get some pretty good food next door from the Square Knot."

"A really under appreciated gem in Seattle. They have really good fried chicken. It's some of the best in the city. It's pressure-fried — cooked in a pressure cooker that's a deep-fryer. And they serve all Georgetown beers."

"For the awesome pin ball, beers and hot dogs."

"I love Linda's. It holds a special place in my heart. That's nostalgic Seattle. Linda's was there before Capitol Hill was even cool, before we even had hipsters. That used to be my main spot — I lived there."

Hooverville

"Hooverville is awesome. I love that place. It's kind of make-shift, it's not a real dive; they just designed it to look like one. But I like any place where you can throw peanut shells on the floor."
